As a Writer-Editor with the Department of National Defence, you will play a crucial role in creating, reviewing, and refining written communications that inform and engage both internal and external audiences. Your work will ensure that DND messaging is clear, accurate, consistent, and aligned with departmental priorities and Government of Canada standards. Your responsibilities will include editing and revising documents for clarity, grammar, and style; collaborating with subject-matter experts and communications professionals to develop compelling content; ensuring compliance with official languages requirements and accessibility standards; and maintaining consistency with DND brand guidelines and communications protocols. You will manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting tight deadlines and adapting to evolving priorities in a dynamic defence and security environment. You will work within DND's communications teams at various levels—from strategic communications and public affairs to internal communications and specialized defence initiatives. This role offers exposure to meaningful work that contributes to the Department's mission of defending Canada and Canadian interests. You will interact regularly with military and civilian colleagues, senior leadership, and external stakeholders, requiring strong interpersonal and professional communication skills.

Professional certifications such as membership in Editors Canada or completion of professional editing courses are valued assets. Government of Canada language requirements must be met—most positions require English and French bilingual abilities (reading, writing, and speaking at specified levels), though some roles may be English or French essential only. Once hired, you will receive orientation training on DND policies, procedures, and communications frameworks specific to the defence sector. Professional development opportunities include courses in advanced editing, digital communications, accessibility standards (WCAG), official languages training, and specialized defence communications topics. DND supports employees pursuing further credentials through tuition reimbursement programs and learning leave. As you advance, you may pursue training in communications strategy, project management, and leadership development to prepare for senior editor or management roles.

Entry Plans

Entry into Writer-Editor positions with DND occurs through several pathways. The primary method is through external competitions advertised on the Government of Canada job board (jobs.gc.ca), where candidates compete for permanent or term positions. DND may also use staffing pools or inventories of pre-qualified candidates to fill positions more quickly. Students and recent graduates may access the position through the Federal Student Work Program or post-secondary recruitment initiatives, which provide valuable experience and a pathway to permanent employment. Lateral moves from other Government of Canada departments are common, particularly for candidates with established federal experience and security clearances. Priority may be given to internal candidates (current DND employees) when positions are posted, providing advancement opportunities for those already serving in the Department. Depending on language proficiency and other factors, candidates may be required to complete language testing or training before appointment. A security clearance (typically Reliability or Secret level for communications roles) will be required and processed as part of the hiring process.

Part-Time Options

Part-time and flexible work arrangements are available for Writer-Editor positions, though availability depends on operational needs and the specific position. Many DND communications teams support flexible scheduling, including compressed work weeks and staggered hours, to balance productivity with employee well-being. Remote or hybrid work options have become more common for writing and editing roles, as much of the work can be performed effectively outside a traditional office setting. However, some positions may require occasional in-office presence for collaboration, meetings, or access to classified materials. Telework arrangements are typically negotiated with your manager and may be subject to security and operational requirements. Job-sharing and part-time permanent positions are occasionally available and can be explored during the recruitment process or after hire. DND is committed to supporting work-life balance while maintaining the quality and timeliness of communications products essential to the Department's operations.
