Overview

Writers in the Department of National Defence (DND) create and develop written content that communicates defence and security policies, initiatives, and information to internal and external audiences. As a Writer, you will craft clear, compelling, and accurate communications that inform public understanding of DND operations, Canadian Armed Forces activities, and defence-related policies. Your work spans multiple formats and platforms, including reports, fact sheets, web content, speeches, and strategic communications materials. Your daily responsibilities include researching complex defence and security topics, interviewing subject matter experts, drafting and editing communications, and collaborating with colleagues across DND to ensure consistency in messaging. You will work within established style guides and communication standards while adapting content for different audiences—from the general public to specialized defence professionals. You may also support communications planning, provide editorial feedback to other writers, and contribute to the development of communications strategies that advance organizational objectives. Writers at DND work in a dynamic, deadline-driven environment where accuracy and clarity are paramount. You will interact with communications teams, senior leaders, subject matter experts, and external stakeholders. The role requires strong time management, attention to detail, and the ability to distil complex information into accessible content.

Some positions may accept candidates with a diploma in Communications or Journalism combined with relevant professional writing experience. Key professional skills include advanced writing and editing abilities, familiarity with AP or Chicago style guides, experience with content management systems, and strong research skills. Knowledge of defence and security issues is an asset but not always required at entry level, as training is often provided. Professional development opportunities within the Public Service include advanced writing courses, technical communications training, digital content creation workshops, and security clearance-related training. Many writers pursue memberships with professional organizations such as Professional Writers Association of Canada (PWAC) or Editors Canada to maintain and enhance their skills throughout their careers.

Entry Plans

You can enter the Writer career in the federal Public Service through several pathways: **Open Competitions**: DND regularly posts Writer positions on the Government of Canada's Job Bank and internal portals. These are open competitions where you apply directly and compete against other candidates. **Staffing Pools**: The Treasury Board Secretariat (TBS) and DND maintain inventory lists of qualified candidates from previous competitions. If you have competed and been successful, you may be hired from these pools without a new competition. **Student Programs**: The federal Public Service offers summer student employment and post-secondary recruitment programs. These provide entry pathways for recent graduates and current students to gain experience and potentially convert to permanent positions. **Lateral Moves**: If you are already employed in the federal Public Service in another role, you may apply for Writer positions through internal competitions or be staffed from existing pools, often with reduced competition. **Bridging Programs**: Some individuals with writing experience in other sectors may qualify for bridging into comparable federal Public Service levels based on their education and professional background. All positions require Canadian citizenship, a valid security clearance (which DND will help you obtain), and the ability to work in Canada.

Part-Time Options

Part-time and flexible work arrangements for Writers at DND vary depending on the specific position, operational needs, and collective agreement terms. Many Writer positions offer some flexibility in work arrangements, particularly in communications teams where deadlines and project-based work can sometimes accommodate non-traditional schedules. Remote and hybrid work options have become more common since 2020. Depending on the role and management approval, many Writers can perform their core duties—researching, writing, and editing—from home or alternative work locations. However, some positions may require in-office presence for collaboration, meetings, or access to classified information systems. If flexible work arrangements are important to you, discuss options during the recruitment process or with your hiring manager once appointed. The Public Service is committed to work-life balance, and many DND offices have formalized telework policies that may support your needs. Part-time positions are occasionally posted, though most Writer roles are full-time permanent or term positions.
