To qualify for this position, you typically need a college diploma or university degree in paralegal studies, law, public administration, or a related field. Many successful candidates have completed a paralegal certificate or diploma program accredited by a provincial law society. Professional certifications such as Certified Paralegal (CP) or membership in provincial paralegal associations are valued. Supervisory training and experience managing teams is essential for this role. The Government of Canada provides ongoing professional development opportunities including courses in legislative processes, management skills, conflict resolution, and specialized training in government legislation and procedures. You will have access to learning through the Canada School of Public Service and internal DND training programs. Familiarity with government systems, security protocols, and the legislative framework governing Canadian defence is advantageous and can be developed on the job.

Entry Plans

You can enter this career through several pathways within the federal Public Service. The most common route is through open competition postings advertised on the Government of Canada job board (jobs.gc.ca), where you can apply directly if you meet the requirements. If you are already a member of the Public Service in a paralegal or legal support role, you may be eligible for internal competitions or priority consideration. Some candidates advance to team lead positions after demonstrating strong performance and leadership potential in entry-level or intermediate paralegal roles within DND or other federal departments. The Public Service Commission manages all competitions and ensures fair, transparent selection processes. Lateral moves from related fields such as policy, administration, or other legal services areas may also be considered if you possess equivalent experience and transferable skills. Student programs and internships in legal services can provide pathways to permanent positions. We encourage you to register with Public Service staffing for notifications of relevant competitions in your region.

Part-Time Options

Part-time and flexible work arrangements may be available for this supervisory role, subject to operational requirements and approval by management. Given the nature of legislative services and the need for consistent team leadership, full-time presence is typically preferred; however, discussions about flexible schedules, compressed work weeks, or job sharing may be possible in some circumstances. Remote work options have expanded within the Government of Canada, and depending on the specific work location and DND's operational needs, some duties such as document review and preparation may be performed remotely. Telework arrangements must be approved by your manager and must not compromise the confidential nature of legislative and legal materials. Part-time work would require careful coordination of supervisory responsibilities to ensure your team receives consistent oversight and support. Interested candidates should discuss flexible work options during the recruitment process or with their hiring manager, as availability depends on the specific position, team needs, and security requirements.
