Overview

As a Supervisor in Real Property Asset Management, you lead a team responsible for managing, maintaining, and optimizing Department of National Defence real property assets. You oversee the day-to-day operations of property management functions, including facility inspections, maintenance coordination, asset valuations, and compliance with federal real property standards. Your role bridges operational management and strategic asset planning, ensuring that military installations and civilian facilities meet operational requirements while maintaining value and sustainability. Your responsibilities include supervising staff, developing work plans and schedules, monitoring budget performance, and ensuring quality standards across property management activities. You work with military and civilian stakeholders to address facility needs, troubleshoot property-related issues, and implement improvements to asset management practices. You may also participate in real property assessments, provide recommendations on facility conditions and capital requirements, and support long-term strategic planning for the department's real property portfolio. You work in an office environment at military installations or Defence administrative headquarters, with regular site visits to properties under management. This position requires strong organizational and interpersonal skills, as you coordinate with multiple departments, contractors, and external partners to deliver effective property management solutions.

Training

You typically need a high school diploma or equivalent at minimum. Many successful candidates hold post-secondary credentials in business administration, facility management, real estate, or related fields. Some positions may require or prefer a university degree in commerce, engineering, or property management. Professional certifications strengthen your candidacy. Relevant credentials include the Real Property Asset Management (RPAM) certification, Professional Real Estate Management (CPM), or Certified Facilities Manager (CFM) designations. Knowledge of federal real property policies, the Treasury Board Policy on Real Property Management, and Defence Real Property Asset Management frameworks is valuable. Ongoing professional development opportunities include training in property valuation techniques, facility condition assessment, budget management, and supervisory skills. The Public Service offers management and leadership development programs for supervisors, and you may access training through professional real estate and facilities management organizations.

Entry Plans

You typically enter this role through a Public Service staffing competition advertised on the Government of Canada Jobs website. The competition is open to Canadian citizens who meet education and experience requirements. Most positions require a minimum of 2-5 years of relevant experience in real property management, facility management, property assessment, or a related field. Lateral moves are common—many supervisors in this role transition from Real Property Asset Management specialist positions within Defence, or from related roles in other federal departments managing real property portfolios. Some candidates move from contractor or private sector property management roles into the Public Service. If you are early in your career, you might enter Defence through entry-level Real Property Asset Management Technician or Specialist positions, building experience before competing for supervisor roles. The Public Service also offers student internship programs and Post-Secondary Recruitment campaigns that can lead to permanent positions. Competitions may be department-specific or government-wide, depending on the vacancy. Success typically requires demonstrating supervisory experience, knowledge of real property management principles, and strong communication skills in both official languages (bilingual positions are common for management roles).

Part-Time Options

Part-time and flexible work arrangements are possible in this role, though availability depends on operational needs and specific position terms. Many supervisor positions in Defence are full-time permanent roles, but some regional or specialized positions may offer flexible schedules or compressed work weeks. Remote work options are limited due to the supervisory nature of the role and the requirement for site visits to monitor properties and oversee operations. However, administrative and planning work may be completed remotely, and hybrid arrangements are increasingly available in Defence offices. Telework policies continue to evolve across the Public Service, and you should discuss specific flexibility options with your manager and HR representative during the hiring process. Leave entitlements follow Public Service standards, including vacation days, sick leave, and family-related leave provisions. Shift work is not typical for supervisor-level positions in real property management, though you may occasionally need to address urgent facility issues outside standard hours.
