This role bridges operational real estate management with strategic property planning, making it essential to the efficient use of government resources. Your day-to-day responsibilities include supervising staff, managing real estate transactions, coordinating with internal stakeholders and external partners, and maintaining accurate property records and documentation. This position typically works in an office environment at a National Defence headquarters or regional facility. You'll collaborate with finance teams, facility managers, military personnel, and external real estate professionals. The role combines administrative work with client-facing responsibilities, requiring strong communication skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.

The Government of Canada provides extensive training for new supervisors, including courses in financial management, human resources, federal procurement, and real property management policies. Professional development opportunities are available through Treasury Board learning programs and Real Property Services networks. You may also pursue certifications in real estate valuation, property management, or federal government administration. Ongoing learning is supported through workshops, mentoring programs, and access to government learning platforms.

Entry Plans

You can enter this career through several pathways within the federal Public Service. The primary route is through open competitions advertised on the Government of Canada Jobs website, where you apply directly for Supervisor positions within National Defence or Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC). These competitions typically require relevant work experience in real estate, property management, or a related field. Internal candidates already working in National Defence or other government departments may apply for lateral moves or promotional opportunities. Public Service employees in related positions (such as Real Estate Officer or Administrative roles) are encouraged to apply when competitions open. Some candidates enter through student or graduate recruitment programs and advance into supervisory roles after demonstrating strong performance. If you're new to the Public Service, you may start in an entry-level Real Estate Services position and work toward supervisor qualifications through experience and internal promotion. Networking with Real Property Services teams and expressing interest in supervisory development can help you prepare for future opportunities.

Part-Time Options

Part-time and flexible work arrangements for this supervisory role depend on operational needs and departmental approval. While some supervisory duties require regular office presence for team management and decision-making, many National Defence locations offer flexible scheduling options for suitable work. Remote work is possible for certain administrative and planning tasks, though in-person time is typically needed for staff supervision, client meetings, and real estate negotiations. The extent of flexibility varies by location and specific duties. Candidates are encouraged to discuss work arrangement possibilities during the recruitment process or with their hiring manager. Part-time supervisory positions are less common due to the continuous nature of team oversight, but job-sharing or compressed work week arrangements may be explored on a case-by-case basis depending on departmental requirements.
