Entry Plans

Entry into this career with the Department of National Defence typically occurs through one of several pathways. You may apply directly to advertised competitions for Supervisor positions posted on the Public Service Commission website or the DND Civilian Careers portal. Many organizations also maintain talent pools of qualified candidates to fill vacancies more quickly. If you already work within the federal Public Service in a related field such as property administration, facilities coordination, or maintenance supervision, you may be eligible for internal lateral moves or promotions. The Federal Student Work Program and Post-Secondary Recruitment Initiative offer pathways for recent graduates to gain experience in facilities management roles. Additionally, the Canadian Armed Forces sometimes recruits experienced facilities and property management professionals from the private sector through public competitions. We encourage you to monitor job postings regularly and connect with DND's recruitment team to learn about upcoming opportunities in your region.

Part-Time Options

This supervisory role is typically offered on a full-time, permanent basis due to the need for consistent leadership and on-site facility management oversight. However, the Department of National Defence recognizes the importance of work-life balance and offers flexibility where operationally feasible. While part-time arrangements for supervisory positions are uncommon, some flexibility may be negotiated for compressed work weeks or flexible scheduling in coordination with your team and management. Remote work options are limited given the hands-on nature of facilities supervision and the requirement to be present on-site for inspections, emergency response, and team oversight. However, certain administrative and planning duties may be performed remotely on occasion. We recommend discussing specific flexibility options with the hiring manager during the recruitment process, as arrangements depend on operational requirements, facility location, and team needs. The Department is committed to supporting employee wellbeing through various leave programs, including parental leave, sick leave, and unpaid leave options available under the Public Service Labour Relations Act.
