This role requires strong leadership skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment. Training

To become a Supervisor in Procurement, you typically need a secondary school diploma or equivalent, with preference given to candidates who have completed post-secondary education in business, supply chain management, public administration, or a related field. Most candidates have several years of experience as a procurement officer or purchasing agent before advancing to a supervisory role. Professional certifications such as the Certified Professional Purchaser (CPP) designation from the Canadian Institute of Procurement and Logistics (CIPL) or the Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) credential are highly valued and may be required or supported by DND. Upon appointment to a supervisory position, you will receive training on Government of Canada management practices, Treasury Board procurement directives, DND policies, and personnel management. DND encourages ongoing professional development through courses in leadership, project management, contract administration, and advanced procurement practices. Access to training through Treasury Board, the Canadian Defence Academy, and professional associations helps you stay current with evolving procurement standards and best practices.

Entry Plans

You can enter the Supervisor - Procurement career in several ways. Many candidates start as Procurement Officers or Purchasing Agents and advance to supervisory roles through internal competitions or merit-based promotions within DND. The Public Service conducts periodic staffing competitions for supervisory positions, advertised on the Government of Canada Job Bank and DND's careers website. If you are already a public servant in a related position, you may be able to apply directly or through lateral moves between departments. Some candidates transition from military service as Canadian Armed Forces members, leveraging their supply chain experience. Recent graduates or career changers can enter as Procurement Officers first, gain 3-5 years of relevant experience, and then compete for supervisory appointments. Student work experience programs and the Post-Secondary Recruitment Initiative (PSRI) may also provide pathways to enter procurement roles and build toward supervisory positions. Interested applicants should monitor the Government of Canada Job Bank and the DND careers website for open competitions.

Part-Time Options

Supervisor - Procurement positions are typically full-time permanent roles, as supervisory duties require consistent presence to manage team performance and handle procurement decisions. However, the Government of Canada and DND do offer flexible work arrangements for eligible employees, which may include flexible hours, compressed work weeks, or telework options depending on operational requirements and manager approval. Remote work may be available for portions of the week, particularly for administrative and planning tasks, though in-person presence is generally expected for team meetings, stakeholder collaboration, and critical procurement activities. Part-time or job-sharing arrangements for supervisory positions are rare but may be negotiated in exceptional circumstances. If you require flexibility due to caregiving responsibilities, health considerations, or other factors, DND encourages you to discuss accommodation options with Human Resources. The specific availability of flexible work depends on the needs of your section and approval by senior management.
