Overview

As a Supervisor of Information Management Policy and Governance, you will lead a team responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing information management policies and governance frameworks across the Department of National Defence. You will provide strategic direction on how the organization manages its information assets, ensures compliance with federal legislation, and maintains data integrity and security. Your team will work on critical initiatives such as Access to Information and Privacy (ATIP) compliance, records management, data governance standards, and information lifecycle management. In this supervisory role, you will be accountable for team performance, resource allocation, and ensuring that DND's information management practices align with Treasury Board directives and best practices. You will collaborate with senior leaders, other government departments, and external stakeholders to develop policies that support operational effectiveness while protecting sensitive military and personal information. The work environment is primarily office-based, though you may attend meetings at various DND locations or participate in interdepartmental working groups. You will balance strategic policy development with day-to-day operational oversight, making this an ideal role for someone who enjoys both leadership and analytical work.

Training

To succeed in this role, you typically need a bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as information science, computer science, public administration, business, or a related discipline. Many successful candidates have specialized knowledge in data management, information governance, or records management. Professional certifications in information management, data governance, or privacy are valuable assets. The Government of Canada offers professional development through the Canadian Information Processing Society (CIPS), the Association of Canadian Archivists (ACA), and specialized training in federal Access to Information and Privacy legislation. As a supervisor, you will have access to leadership and management development programs offered by the Canadian Forces and the Public Service. Ongoing training in emerging technologies, data analytics tools, and evolving compliance standards will help you stay current in this rapidly changing field. DND also supports employees pursuing relevant advanced degrees or professional designations related to information management and governance.

Entry Plans

Entry to this position typically occurs through competitive public service recruitment processes. You may enter as a Supervisor directly if you have prior supervisory experience in information management, or you may advance into a supervisory role after working in a non-supervisory Information Management position within DND or another federal organization. The Public Service Commission regularly posts competitions for supervisory roles in various departments. If you are already working in the federal Public Service in an information management or related field, you can apply for advertised competitions. Some candidates enter through lateral moves from other departments where they have demonstrated relevant expertise and leadership capability. If you are new to the federal Public Service, look for entry-level Information Management positions (typically at the Analyst or Coordinator level) to build your experience and qualifications. DND also participates in federal student recruitment programs, including internship opportunities for students pursuing relevant degrees. These programs can provide a pathway to permanent employment. Once employed in a non-supervisory capacity, you can apply for internal developmental opportunities and supervisory competitions as they arise.

Part-Time Options

Part-time and flexible work arrangements are generally available for this supervisory position, though the extent may depend on operational requirements and team needs. Many DND civilian positions offer flexible work schedules, compressed work weeks, or part-time arrangements when staffing levels permit. Remote work options have expanded across the federal Public Service, and depending on the specific duties and DND security requirements, supervisory work in information management policy and governance may be performed partially or fully remotely. Telework is particularly feasible for policy development, research, and administrative tasks. However, supervisory responsibilities such as one-on-one meetings, team development, and in-person collaboration may require periodic on-site presence. Job-sharing arrangements are sometimes possible for supervisory roles, though they require careful coordination and approval. If flexible work arrangements are important to you, discuss options during the recruitment process or with your manager once hired. The specific flexibility available will depend on your location, the criticality of your duties, and organizational needs during any given period.
