Overview

As a Supervisor - Information Management (IM) Business Interface, you will lead a team of information management professionals who serve as the bridge between business operations and IM services across Department of National Defence (DND) organizations. You will be responsible for overseeing the delivery of IM solutions that support operational and administrative requirements, ensuring information is managed effectively, securely, and in compliance with federal standards. Your role combines strategic oversight with hands-on involvement in solving complex information management challenges that directly impact defence operations and civilian workforce productivity. In this supervisory position, you will manage team performance, coordinate IM initiatives, and represent your team to senior leadership and business stakeholders. You will ensure compliance with Treasury Board policies, the Access to Information and Privacy Act, and DND directives while fostering a collaborative environment that encourages professional growth. Your day-to-day work involves planning resource allocation, reviewing quality of IM deliverables, coaching team members, and addressing information management issues that arise from changing business needs or technological shifts. You will work closely with records managers, document control specialists, and IM coordinators to optimize how information flows through organizational systems. You will typically work in an office environment at DND facilities, though parts of your work may involve virtual collaboration with geographically dispersed teams across Defence organizations. This position requires strong organizational skills, the ability to communicate technical IM concepts to non-specialist audiences, and a commitment to creating inclusive, respectful workplaces. Your success depends on balancing operational demands with team development and maintaining focus on how effective information management supports the broader defence mission.

Training

To succeed in this role, you should have a post-secondary education in business administration, information management, library science, records management, or a related field. Many successful candidates hold a bachelor's degree; some come from two-year college programs combined with substantial work experience. You will need to demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of IM principles, practices, and federal requirements through your education and professional background. Professional certifications are valuable and sometimes expected. These may include Certified Information Professional (CIP) credentials, records management certifications, or information governance qualifications from recognized bodies such as ARMA International or the Canadian Information Processing Society (CIPS). DND may support your pursuit of these certifications through professional development funding. Continuous learning is essential in this role. You should plan to engage in ongoing professional development including training in DND systems and policies, federal information management directives, privacy and security frameworks, and supervisory skills. DND offers internal training programs, and the federal Public Service provides access to learning through the Canada School of Public Service. Many supervisors also benefit from courses in change management, leadership, and team development to enhance their ability to guide their teams through evolving technology and policy environments.

Entry Plans

Entry into this supervisory position typically follows one of several pathways within the federal Public Service. Many candidates begin as Information Management Specialists, Coordinators, or Officers and advance to supervisory roles after demonstrating strong performance and leadership potential. You may enter DND's IM workforce through public competitions advertised on the Government of Canada Jobs website, which are open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents. If you are already working in the federal Public Service in a non-supervisory IM or related administrative role, you can apply for supervisory competitions. These competitions assess your technical IM knowledge, supervisory readiness, and ability to lead teams. Some candidates come from other federal departments with IM experience and successfully transition to DND through interdepartmental staffing processes. DND occasionally uses bridging pools or feeder pools to identify candidates from within their organization who demonstrate supervisory potential. If you are a strong performer in an IM role at DND, your manager may nominate you or encourage you to apply for these development opportunities. The Public Service may also offer development programs for employees identified as having high potential for management roles. University graduates with relevant degrees in records management, information science, or library science may enter more directly into IM positions with advancement potential, though entry is typically at the specialist level rather than supervisory level. Lateral moves from private sector information management or business roles are possible if your experience aligns with federal IM standards and you can demonstrate understanding of public sector environments.

Part-Time Options

Part-time employment in supervisory IM roles is limited, as supervisory positions typically require a continuous presence to effectively manage teams, make decisions, and maintain operational oversight. However, DND recognizes the importance of work-life balance and offers flexibility within full-time supervisory arrangements. Flexible working arrangements are often available and may include flexible hours (such as starting earlier or later in the day to accommodate personal commitments), compressed work weeks, or hybrid work schedules that combine office and remote work. Many IM supervisors are able to work remotely for portions of their week, particularly for activities like team planning, strategic thinking, or one-on-one coaching sessions with staff, though some in-office presence is typically required for team management and cross-departmental collaboration. Remote work options have expanded within the federal Public Service, and depending on DND's current workforce policies and your specific organizational context, you may be able to negotiate a hybrid arrangement that balances operational needs with flexibility. The availability of these options depends on your location, team structure, and departmental priorities. If part-time or flexible work is important to your career goals, these considerations should be discussed during the hiring process or once you join the organization.
