Overview

As a Supervisor - Data Management, you lead a team responsible for managing, organizing, and protecting an organization's data assets. You oversee the design, implementation, and maintenance of databases and data systems that support Defence and National Security operations. Your role bridges technical expertise and people management, ensuring your team delivers reliable data solutions while meeting federal security and compliance standards. Your day-to-day responsibilities include supervising and mentoring data management staff, coordinating database administration activities, managing data infrastructure projects, and ensuring data quality and security. You work with stakeholders across Defence to understand their data needs, prioritize requests, and allocate team resources effectively. You also monitor system performance, troubleshoot technical issues, implement security protocols, and ensure compliance with Treasury Board policies and federal privacy legislation. You work in a professional office environment, typically at a Defence establishment or National Defence headquarters location. The role involves both strategic planning and hands-on technical work. You may be on-call for critical system issues and could work extended hours during system upgrades or emergency situations. Your work directly supports Canada's defence capabilities by ensuring data infrastructure remains secure, efficient, and available.

Training

Many successful candidates have post-secondary credentials in information systems or data management. Relevant certifications such as Oracle Database Administrator, Microsoft SQL Server certifications, or CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional) are valued. Once hired, you receive training in Government of Canada systems, security protocols, and Defence-specific databases and applications. The Public Service offers professional development courses in management and supervision through the Canada School of Public Service. You may pursue advanced certifications in specialized database platforms, cloud technologies, or cybersecurity relevant to federal operations. Mentorship from senior managers and internal knowledge-sharing with peers support your development into the supervisory role.
