Entry Plans

Entry into this career in the Public Service typically occurs through federal government job competitions advertised on the Government of Canada's official job board (Jobs.gc.ca). Positions may be advertised at the CR-04 or CR-05 classification level, depending on experience and qualifications. You may enter through several pathways: direct competition for external candidates with relevant private or public sector experience; internal competitions open to current DND and federal government employees; or lateral moves from related human resources positions. Some candidates transition from Compensation and Benefits Advisor or Benefits Officer roles after gaining operational experience. The Public Service Commission manages the recruitment process and uses various assessment methods, including written tests, interviews, and evaluation of education and work experience. Preference may be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents. If you are a recent graduate, you may also explore the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) or post-graduation recruitment initiatives to gain initial Public Service experience.

Part-Time Options

Part-time and flexible work arrangements are often available in compensation and benefits positions, depending on operational requirements and team needs. Many DND human resources offices support flexible schedules, compressed work weeks, and remote work options where appropriate. Given the nature of supervisory responsibilities and the need to manage and support your team, full-time presence may be required during certain periods or for specific meetings and training. However, administrative and planning tasks can often be completed remotely using Government of Canada technology and systems. Specific flexibility options are determined during the hiring process and depend on the position's location and operational demands. It is recommended to discuss flexible work arrangements as part of your application or early in your employment to find an arrangement that meets both organizational needs and your personal circumstances.
