Your role bridges the gap between front-line support staff and senior management, making you essential to maintaining operational readiness through reliable technology support. Your responsibilities include supervising and evaluating team members, managing workload distribution, handling escalated technical issues, and coordinating with other IT departments to resolve complex problems. You will also participate in process improvements, contribute to budget planning for your service area, and ensure compliance with DND IT policies and security protocols. Your leadership will directly impact how effectively the organization's workforce can access the technology tools they need to perform their duties. You will work regular business hours with potential on-call responsibilities depending on operational needs. The role requires strong communication skills, as you will regularly interact with staff at all levels, from front-line technicians to senior management.

You can enter this career through several pathways within the federal Public Service. The most common route is through a competitive staffing process advertised on the Government of Canada Jobs website. Candidates typically progress from User Support Technician positions into supervisory roles after demonstrating strong technical knowledge and leadership potential. You may also enter as a lateral move from a similar supervisory position in another government department or as an internal promotion within DND. Part-Time Options

Part-time and job-share arrangements may be available for supervisory positions in Business Line Support Services, though this depends on operational requirements and team structure. Some DND locations offer flexible work schedules or compressed work weeks to supervisors who can maintain coverage and team management responsibilities. Remote work options have expanded across the federal Public Service, including DND. Depending on the specific business needs and the nature of support services your team provides, you may be able to work remotely for portions of the week, though supervisory duties may require periodic in-office presence for team coordination and mentoring. Specific remote work arrangements are determined on a case-by-case basis in consultation with your manager and are subject to DND operational requirements and the collective agreement that applies to your position.
