Government of Canada ATIP professionals often pursue the Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP) designation or similar credentials offered through the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP). The Treasury Board Secretariat and Justice Canada offer specialized courses in Access to Information and Privacy administration. As a supervisor, you may pursue advanced certifications in information management or federal governance. Entry Plans

You can enter this career through advertised competitions for the Supervisor - Access to Information and Privacy position, typically open to Canadian citizens. Many candidates advance to supervisor roles after working 2-3 years as an ATIP Analyst or Coordinator within DND or other federal departments. The Public Service Commission regularly posts ATIP positions across government, and your experience in one department transfers well to others. If you are already in the federal Public Service, you may apply through internal competitions or lateral moves if your department has ATIP vacancies. Student programs such as the Post-Secondary Recruitment Campaign or the Federal Student Work Experience Program can provide entry-level experience in ATIP roles, potentially leading to permanent positions. Some candidates enter through the Casual Worker or Term Employee stream and transition to permanent status. Veterans and Indigenous peoples may access dedicated recruitment programs offered by the Public Service Commission.

Part-Time Options

Part-time and flexible work arrangements are generally available for ATIP supervisor roles, depending on operational needs and DND's work authorization policies. Many supervisory positions offer flexible hours within core business hours to accommodate management responsibilities. Remote work has become more common in ATIP roles since much of the work involves document review and digital file management; however, some in-office presence is typically required for team supervision and meetings. Specific flexibility options depend on your employing division and staffing agreements with your union representative (typically the Public Service Alliance of Canada). You are encouraged to discuss accommodation options during the competition process or after hiring. DND is committed to supporting work-life balance and may offer options such as compressed work weeks, telecommute arrangements, or job-sharing, subject to operational requirements and approval by your manager.
