Overview

As a Sports Advisor with the Department of National Defence, you will provide expert guidance on sports policy, program development, and athlete support initiatives. You will work with military leadership, civilian staff, and external stakeholders to promote physical fitness, competitive excellence, and the health and well-being of Canadian Armed Forces members. Your role combines strategic planning with hands-on program delivery, ensuring that sports and recreation initiatives align with DND objectives and support military personnel across Canada. Your day-to-day responsibilities include analyzing sports trends and best practices, developing or updating sports policies and guidelines, coordinating athletic events and training programs, and advising on facility use and resource allocation. You may also liaise with national and international sports organizations, evaluate program effectiveness, and provide consultation on matters related to military sports competitions and athlete development. This role requires strong communication skills, as you will present findings to senior management and collaborate with diverse teams. You will typically work in an office environment at a DND location, though the role may involve travel to military bases, sports events, or conferences. Your work contributes directly to maintaining the operational readiness and morale of the Canadian Armed Forces.

Training

To qualify for a Sports Advisor position, you typically need a bachelor's degree in sports management, kinesiology, recreation management, physical education, or a related field. Some positions may accept equivalent work experience in sports programming or policy development. Knowledge of federal government operations, policy development processes, and military culture is valuable but can often be acquired on the job. Certifications that strengthen your candidacy include credentials from recognized sports management organizations, coaching certifications, or professional designations in recreation and parks management. Once hired, you will have access to professional development through the Public Service Learning Portal, departmental training programs, and opportunities to attend conferences and workshops relevant to sports policy and program management. DND also supports employees pursuing advanced credentials or specialized certifications in their field.

Entry Plans

You can enter this career through several pathways within the federal Public Service. The most common route is through a Public Service Commission (PSC) advertised competition specific to this position or a similar role at DND or other departments. These competitions are posted on the Government of Canada Job Bank and require you to submit an application demonstrating your education, experience, and competencies. Alternatively, you may enter through an inventory or staffing pool maintained by DND if one exists for Sports Advisors or related positions. If you are already a public servant in another department or role, you can apply for internal competitions or pursue a lateral move to DND. Students and recent graduates may find opportunities through the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) or the Post-Secondary Recruitment Campaign, which can lead to permanent positions. To improve your chances, ensure your resume clearly highlights relevant experience in sports programming, policy analysis, or program coordination. Tailor your application to the specific competencies sought, such as communication, project management, and stakeholder engagement.

Part-Time Options

Part-time and flexible work arrangements are generally available for Sports Advisor positions, depending on operational needs and departmental approval. Many DND civilian employees work compressed work weeks, staggered schedules, or part-time hours (typically 75% or 50% of full-time) by mutual agreement with their manager. These arrangements are supported under the Treasury Board Directive on Flexible Work Arrangements. Remote work is increasingly available for administrative and planning aspects of the role, such as policy development, research, and stakeholder consultations. However, some duties may require in-person presence at military facilities, sports events, or training sessions. When you are offered a position, your hiring manager will discuss the specific flexibility options available for that posting and how they align with operational requirements. Work-life balance and family-friendly policies are priorities within the Public Service, and many managers actively support reasonable accommodation requests.
