Safety Inspectors play a critical role in protecting the health and safety of Department of National Defence personnel, civilians, and the public. They conduct inspections, assessments, and audits of Defence facilities, equipment, and operations to ensure compliance with federal safety regulations, occupational health and safety standards, and DND policies. Safety Inspectors identify potential hazards, document findings, and recommend corrective actions to prevent accidents, injuries, and environmental incidents.
Your day-to-day responsibilities include conducting routine and specialized safety inspections at military bases, training facilities, and operational sites; investigating workplace incidents and near-miss events; reviewing safety documentation and compliance records; and preparing detailed inspection reports with recommendations for improvement. You will work closely with facility managers, supervisors, and safety committees to implement safety initiatives and monitor the effectiveness of corrective measures.
Safety Inspectors work in diverse environments across Canada and potentially overseas, including office settings for report writing and analysis, as well as field locations such as warehouses, workshops, hangars, and training grounds. The role requires attention to detail, strong communication skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively with personnel at all organizational levels.

Training
To qualify as a Safety Inspector with DND, you typically need a high school diploma or equivalent (Secondary V in Quebec) at minimum. Many successful candidates have completed post-secondary education in occupational health and safety, construction safety, industrial hygiene, or a related discipline. Some positions may require or prefer a diploma or certificate from a recognized safety program.
Certifications that strengthen your application include the Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation, the Certified Health and Safety Auditor (CHSA) credential, or provincial Occupational Health and Safety certifications. Once hired, the Government of Canada provides comprehensive on-the-job training, mentoring, and access to professional development programs. DND supports employees pursuing ongoing safety certifications and specialized training in areas such as hazmat inspection, confined space assessment, and emergency response procedures. You will have opportunities to attend courses through the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety and other recognized training institutions.
Entry Plans
You can enter the DND civilian workforce as a Safety Inspector through several pathways. The primary route is through open Public Service competitions advertised on the Government of Canada jobs website (jobs.gc.ca). Competitions are typically open to Canadian citizens and may include both internal (current Public Service employees) and external (outside the Public Service) candidates.
If you are already a federal employee, you may transition into a Safety Inspector position through internal competitions or lateral moves, which can accelerate your entry. The Public Service also periodically establishes staffing pools for inspection and regulatory officer roles, allowing qualified candidates to be hired quickly as positions become available across DND and other departments.
