Overview

Research Mathematicians in the Department of National Defence develop advanced mathematical theories, models, and solutions to support defence and security objectives. They conduct original research, apply mathematical principles to complex problems, and contribute to innovation in areas such as cryptography, operations research, data analysis, and systems modelling. Research Mathematicians work in a collaborative environment with scientists, engineers, and military personnel, translating theoretical concepts into practical applications that enhance Canadian defence capabilities. As a Research Mathematician, you will engage in independent and collaborative research projects, publish findings in peer-reviewed journals, present at conferences, and mentor junior researchers. Your work directly impacts policy decisions, technology development, and strategic planning within the Department. You will have access to advanced computational resources and work alongside multidisciplinary teams in modern research facilities across Canada.

Training

To qualify as a Research Mathematician, you must hold a Master's degree in Mathematics or a related discipline from a recognized university. A PhD in Mathematics or a closely related field is preferred for more senior positions and advanced research opportunities. You should demonstrate strong analytical skills, proficiency with mathematical software and programming languages, and a solid understanding of research methodologies. Professional development is ongoing and includes participation in specialized training programs, attendance at national and international conferences, advanced technical workshops, and collaboration with academic institutions. The Department supports continuous learning through funding for professional certifications, courses in emerging mathematical fields, and opportunities to pursue additional academic credentials. Membership in professional organizations such as the Canadian Mathematical Society is encouraged.

Entry Plans

Entry into the Research Mathematician position typically occurs through federal public service competitions advertised on the Government of Canada Job Bank and the DND website. Candidates with a Master's degree can apply directly to available positions.
