Entry Plans

The primary way to enter the Rental Clerk career stream in the federal Public Service is through a competitive staffing process. The Department of National Defence regularly advertises job opportunities on the Government of Canada Job Bank (jobs.gc.ca) and through the DND civilian careers portal. You must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident to apply. Entry typically occurs at the CR-02 or CR-03 classification level, depending on your qualifications and experience. The Public Service may conduct competitions as needed to build pools of qualified candidates for multiple positions. Some employees enter this role through lateral moves from other administrative or retail services positions within the federal government. Post-secondary graduates or those with relevant customer service or administrative experience may have an advantage in the selection process. Student and youth programs, such as the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) or the Post-Secondary Recruitment Initiative (PSRI), may provide pathways to permanent employment for eligible candidates. We recommend monitoring the jobs.gc.ca website regularly, setting up job alerts for Rental Clerk positions, and following DND's civilian careers communications for announcements.

Part-Time Options

Part-time opportunities for Rental Clerk positions in DND are available depending on operational needs and facility requirements. Many administrative roles, including rental services, can be structured on a part-time basis (typically 15 to 30 hours per week), though availability varies by location and current staffing levels. Flexible work arrangements, such as flexible hours or compressed work weeks, may be negotiated with your manager based on operational requirements. Remote work options are limited for this role due to the need for direct client interaction, access to physical rental inventory, and real-time transaction processing, though some administrative tasks may occasionally be performed remotely with manager approval. The Public Service is committed to supporting work-life balance for all employees. If you are interested in part-time or flexible arrangements, we recommend discussing options during the hiring process or with your manager once employed. Availability of flexible work depends on the specific DND location and rental services unit. Contact the recruiting team or your local DND Human Resources office for details about flexible work options at your desired work location.
