While not always mandatory, professional certifications are valued and may be pursued during your employment. Entry Plans

Entry into this career with the Government of Canada typically occurs through competitive staffing processes. Most positions are advertised through the Public Service Commission website and are open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents. You may enter as a Real Property Portfolio Analyst at various levels depending on your education and experience. The Public Service uses advertised competitions, internal talent pools, and sometimes student recruitment programs to fill positions. Lateral transfers from other government departments are also possible if you have relevant real property or asset management experience. Some regions may maintain inventory lists of qualified candidates from recent competitions, allowing faster staffing when positions become available. To increase your competitiveness, gain practical experience in real estate analysis, property management, financial analysis, or related fields. Familiarity with geographic information systems (GIS), property valuation methods, and real estate databases is an asset. Demonstrating knowledge of federal procurement and Treasury Board policies can also strengthen your application.

Part-Time Options

Part-time and flexible work arrangements are available in many Real Property Portfolio Analyst positions, though availability depends on operational needs and specific office locations. Some roles in headquarters or larger real property offices are more amenable to flexible schedules than positions with critical daily operational requirements. Remote work options have expanded across the federal public service, and depending on the position and supervisor approval, some analytical and research components of this work can be performed from home. However, positions requiring regular access to physical property files, attendance at in-person meetings with stakeholders, or direct facility inspections may have greater on-site requirements. We recommend discussing specific flexibility options during the application and interview process, as arrangements are determined on a case-by-case basis considering operational requirements and departmental policies. The Government of Canada is committed to supporting work-life balance while maintaining service delivery to the Department of National Defence.
