Overview

As a Real Property Asset Management Officer, you play a critical role in supporting the Department of National Defence's real property operations across Canada and internationally. You are responsible for managing, administering, and optimizing real property assets including land, buildings, and facilities that support military operations and defence activities. Your work ensures that DND's real property portfolio is maintained efficiently, meets operational needs, and delivers value to the Canadian Armed Forces and civilian personnel. Your day-to-day responsibilities include conducting property assessments, preparing real estate documentation, managing lease agreements, coordinating with internal stakeholders and external property partners, and maintaining comprehensive property records and databases. You analyze real property data to support asset planning decisions, monitor compliance with federal real property policies, and contribute to long-term facility planning strategies. You work collaboratively with military and civilian colleagues, real estate professionals, facility managers, and external vendors to ensure properties meet Defence priorities. You work in a dynamic federal environment where attention to detail, sound judgment, and problem-solving skills are essential. Your contributions directly impact the operational readiness of Canadian Armed Forces bases and establishments. This position offers opportunities to develop specialized expertise in government real property management and to advance your career within Defence and across the federal Public Service.

You will typically need a secondary school diploma or equivalent as a minimum educational requirement. Many successful candidates possess post-secondary education in real estate, property management, business administration, or a related field from a recognized Canadian institution. Knowledge of real property principles, federal procurement policies, and asset management practices is valuable. The Government of Canada provides comprehensive on-the-job training tailored to Defence real property operations, including orientation on DND policies, property management systems, and federal real estate legislation. As you progress, you may pursue professional certifications such as the Real Estate Council certifications recognized in your province, the Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM) designation, or specialized training through the Canada School of Public Service. Ongoing professional development opportunities are available through federal training programs, workshops on emerging real property management practices, and cross-functional knowledge-sharing initiatives within Defence. You will also gain experience working with specialized real property software systems and federal asset management tools.

Entry Plans

You can enter this career through several pathways within the federal Public Service. The primary route is applying to advertised competitions posted on the Government of Canada Job Bank and DND recruitment websites. These competitions are open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents and typically specify desired qualifications and experience levels. If you are currently a federal public servant, you may pursue lateral moves or internal staffing processes within Defence or other government departments with real property management functions. Some positions may be filled through staffing pools created from previous competitions, allowing qualified candidates to be appointed without a new competition. Students can gain relevant experience through federal student employment programs, including the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) and Co-op programs, which provide paid work placements during academic terms and may lead to permanent opportunities upon graduation. Recent graduates may qualify through post-secondary recruitment initiatives. Veterans and members of the Canadian Armed Forces may have priority consideration under veterans hiring policies. If you are transitioning from military service with relevant real property or facility management experience, DND values your background and encourages you to apply to positions matching your skills.

Part-Time Options

Real Property Asset Management Officer positions are typically full-time, permanent roles. However, flexible work arrangements may be available depending on operational requirements and specific work location. Many DND real property management functions can be performed remotely or in a hybrid model, particularly administrative tasks, data analysis, and documentation work. Remote work eligibility is assessed on a case-by-case basis following Treasury Board Secretariat guidelines and DND operational needs. Part-time or casual employment in real property asset management is less common at DND, as most positions require consistent presence for stakeholder coordination, property inspections, and ongoing asset administration. However, you are encouraged to discuss flexible work options during the recruitment process or after appointment. Shift work is generally not applicable to this role. Term or contract positions may occasionally be available for specific projects or temporary assignments, which can provide entry points into the federal Public Service for candidates gaining relevant experience before competing for permanent positions.
