Entry Plans

Entry to this career in the federal Public Service typically occurs through Public Service Commission (PSC) competitions advertised on the Government of Canada Job Bank and DND's careers website. Positions are usually posted at the AS-02 or AS-03 levels (equivalent to earlier AS-3 to AS-4 classifications) depending on experience and education. Most competitions require a decade or more of relevant professional experience for direct entry at higher levels. The Government of Canada also offers pathways through the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) and Post-Secondary Recruitment (PSR) initiatives, allowing students and recent graduates to gain experience before competing for permanent positions. Lateral moves from other government departments with transferable real property, contract management, or analytical experience are common entry points. Some candidates progress into this role after working in related positions within DND's Real Property Services or after roles in other federal departments managing property or infrastructure. Successful candidates typically demonstrate strong analytical abilities, attention to detail, knowledge of real estate principles, and familiarity with government processes and Treasury Board requirements.

Many positions can accommodate part-time schedules, job sharing, or compressed work weeks, subject to departmental needs and manager approval. Remote and hybrid work options have become increasingly available across the federal government, particularly for analytical and administrative roles. Depending on the specific position and unit, you may be able to perform certain duties from home, such as document review, research, analysis, and report preparation.
