Real Estate Advisors in the Department of National Defence provide expert guidance on property management, acquisition, and disposition matters across Canada's defence infrastructure. As a Real Estate Advisor, you will evaluate properties, assess real estate market conditions, and develop recommendations that support DND's operational requirements and financial stewardship. Your work ensures that defence facilities and real property assets are managed efficiently and in compliance with federal real property policies. In this role, you will assess property values, analyze real estate transactions, conduct market research, and prepare detailed reports for senior decision-makers. You may work with external real estate professionals, conduct site inspections, review property documentation, and provide advice on lease negotiations and property disposition. You will contribute to strategic real property planning that balances military operational needs with sound financial management. You will work in a collaborative environment with military and civilian colleagues across defence establishments. Your role is essential to ensuring DND makes informed decisions about its substantial real property portfolio while maintaining readiness and operational efficiency.

Once hired, you will receive training specific to federal real property management policies, DND property systems, and government procurement regulations. The Public Service provides access to ongoing professional development through the Canadian Real Estate Forum, industry conferences, and internal Government of Canada training programs. You may pursue advanced certifications in real estate valuation, property management, or related specializations to advance your career. Participation in professional associations and continuous learning in market analysis and property management practices is encouraged.

Entry Plans

Entry to the Real Estate Advisor position typically occurs through federal public service job competitions advertised on the Government of Canada Jobs website (jobs.gc.ca). Competitions may be open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or current Public Service employees depending on staffing needs. Current federal employees can apply through internal competitions or lateral moves from related roles in real property management, facilities management, or asset management. Some positions may be filled through staffing pools or priority hiring initiatives. Recent graduates or those new to the Public Service can enter through open competitions that welcome external applicants with relevant education and experience. DND may also participate in federal student work programs, including the Student Work Placement Program and Post-Secondary Recruitment Campaign, offering pathways for students pursuing real estate or business administration studies. Networking with DND Real Property departments and maintaining awareness of job postings on jobs.gc.ca are effective strategies for career entry.

Part-Time Options

Real Estate Advisor positions are typically full-time permanent roles; however, flexible work arrangements may be available depending on operational needs and management approval. Many DND locations support flexible schedules, compressed work weeks, or telework options for tasks involving research, analysis, and report preparation. Remote work opportunities exist for desk-based activities such as property valuation analysis, market research, and report writing. However, site inspections and meetings with stakeholders may require in-person attendance at specific locations. The extent of flexible and remote work depends on your specific position, location, and supervisor's discretion. At the time of hire, you can discuss flexible work options with your hiring manager to explore arrangements that align with both operational requirements and your needs. Part-time or casual positions in this field are less common within DND but may be available in specific circumstances; inquire directly during the application process for details on work arrangement options.
