Entry Plans

You can enter this career through several pathways within the federal Public Service. Most positions are advertised through the Government of Canada Jobs website (jobs.gc.ca), where you can apply to Public Outreach Advisor positions at various levels (typically GL-02 to GL-03 for entry to mid-level roles). Competitions are merit-based and may include written assessments, interviews, and evaluation of your portfolio. Current federal public servants can apply through internal competitions or lateral moves from related communications roles. Part-Time Options

Part-time and flexible work arrangements are available in this position, though availability may vary depending on operational requirements and the specific posting. Many DND communications roles support hybrid work models, allowing you to work both remotely and from the office. Remote work options have expanded across the Department, making it possible to perform many outreach coordination and relationship management tasks from home. Flexible scheduling and telework are negotiated with your manager and may depend on your team's operational needs and the nature of your assignments. Some outreach activities—such as community events, stakeholder meetings, and in-person engagement—may require on-site presence. When applying for positions, inquire about flexibility options with the hiring manager, as arrangements can often be customized to balance operational needs with employee well-being. The Department is committed to supporting work-life balance and accessibility for its civilian workforce.
