Entry Plans

Entry to the Police Chief position in the federal Public Service typically occurs through competitive staffing processes managed by the Treasury Board and DND Human Resources. Most candidates progress through the ranks within the Royal Canadian Military Police or enter through external competitions when vacancies exist. To be considered, you must first be eligible to work in Canada and hold or be willing to obtain a security clearance, which is mandatory for this role. You may enter the DND civilian police workforce through lateral transfer if you hold equivalent rank and experience in provincial, territorial, or municipal police services. The federal Public Service may also conduct national recruitment campaigns to attract experienced police leaders. During the application process, you will be assessed on your leadership experience, strategic vision, financial management skills, and ability to work within the federal government context. Candidates typically attend interviews with senior DND officials and may participate in assessment centres that evaluate decision-making and executive presence.

Part-Time Options

The Police Chief position is a full-time, permanent role that typically does not offer part-time arrangements due to the strategic and operational leadership demands of the position. However, the Government of Canada is committed to supporting work-life balance through flexible work arrangements where operationally feasible. Depending on organizational needs and agreement with management, limited flexibility may be available for arrangements such as modified work schedules or compressed work weeks, though on-call availability is often required for emergencies and critical incidents. Remote work is generally not available for this role, as the position requires your presence at the workplace to provide visible leadership, conduct operational oversight, and respond to urgent situations. However, some administrative tasks may be performed remotely depending on DND policy and operational requirements. The Government of Canada offers other support programs including Employee Assistance Programs, flexible leave provisions, and access to wellness resources to help you manage personal and professional responsibilities.
