Professional certifications in Human Resources are valuable and increasingly recognized in the federal public service. You may consider pursuing designations such as the Canadian HR Reporter certification, or becoming a Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) through professional associations like the Canadian Council of Human Resources Associations (CCHRA).
Once hired with DND, you'll have access to professional development opportunities including Government of Canada learning programs, HR-specific training, and tuition support for relevant credentials. The department supports continuous learning through courses in performance management, talent development, labour relations, and Government of Canada policies and procedures.
Entry Plans
Entry into this career with the Department of National Defence typically occurs through open competitive recruitment processes posted on the Government of Canada's job board (Jobs.gc.ca). Positions are advertised when vacancies arise, and you'll compete against other qualified candidates in a fair and transparent selection process.
If you're already working in the federal public service in a different role or department, you may be able to apply as an internal candidate, which can provide advantages in some competitions. DND occasionally uses staffing pools to quickly fill multiple vacancies, allowing you to be considered for positions across the organization without applying to each posting individually.
Student and new graduate programs, such as the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) or Post-Secondary Recruitment Campaign (PSRC), may provide pathways to permanent employment if you're transitioning from education. Lateral moves from other HR roles within DND or other government departments are also common as employees gain experience and seek new opportunities within the Human Resources Management career family.
Part-Time Options
Part-time and flexible work arrangements for Performance and Talent Management Coordinators are determined on a position-by-position basis and depend on operational needs. Many coordinator-level positions in DND Human Resources do offer flexible scheduling options, including the possibility of compressed work weeks or flexible daily start and end times.
Remote and hybrid work arrangements have become more common in HR support roles since 2020. Depending on the specific position and the DND office location, you may be able to work from home for a portion of your week or full-time, particularly if your role involves primarily administrative, database, or report-preparation work. However, some duties—such as in-person meetings with managers and employees or coordinating on-site training events—may require occasional office presence.
Work arrangements are typically negotiated during the hiring process and can be adjusted based on operational requirements and manager approval. It's recommended to discuss flexible work options when applying or interviewing for specific positions, as arrangements vary across DND locations and units.
