Professional certifications that strengthen your candidacy include designation through the Pension Investment Association of Canada (PIAC), the Canadian Association of Pension Supervisors (CAPS), or completion of the Canadian Institute of Management (CIM) benefits administration program. Government of Canada employees have access to tuition assistance and professional development funds to support ongoing learning. Once hired, you will receive comprehensive on-the-job training in DND pension policies, federal legislation, and departmental systems. Entry Plans

Entry into a Pension Coordinator position with DND typically occurs through advertised Public Service Commission competitions. These competitions are open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents, and are posted on the Government of Canada Jobs website. Most Pension Coordinator positions are at the CR-04 or CR-05 classification level. You may also enter through internal competitions if you are already employed by DND or another federal department, which often have broader eligibility criteria. Student programs such as the Co-op Student Program or Post-Secondary Recruitment Campaign can provide a pathway for recent graduates to gain experience and transition into permanent roles. Lateral moves from other HR positions within DND or the broader Public Service are common. If you have experience in compensation, benefits, payroll, or general human resources administration, you may be considered for Pension Coordinator roles. Some candidates progress into this role after working in related positions such as HR Analyst, Benefits Officer, or Administrative Assistant roles within DND.

Part-Time Options

Part-time and flexible work arrangements for Pension Coordinator positions are available depending on departmental needs and collective agreement provisions. Many DND locations offer flexible working hours, compressed work weeks, or job sharing opportunities where operationally feasible. These arrangements are negotiated between you and your manager based on business requirements. Remote or hybrid work options have expanded within the federal Public Service in recent years. Pension Coordinator roles can often accommodate partial remote work, particularly for administrative tasks, data entry, and correspondence. However, some in-office time may be required for access to secure systems, confidential records, and collaboration with colleagues. Federal employees also benefit from other work-life balance initiatives including parental leave, compassionate leave, and access to the Public Service Health Care Plan. DND HR specialists can discuss specific flexible work options during the hiring process and after you join the department. Availability of these arrangements may vary based on your specific work location and operational requirements.
