Entry Plans

There are several pathways to become a Pension Advisor with DND: **Public Service Job Competitions**: DND regularly posts Pension Advisor positions through the Government of Canada job board (jobs.gc.ca). These competitions are open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents. You will need to meet the education and experience requirements and pass a written assessment and interview. **Internal Mobility**: If you are already a federal public servant in another department or role, you may apply for Pension Advisor positions through internal competitions. Your existing government experience and benefits knowledge may give you an advantage. **Lateral Moves**: Employees in related compensation and benefits roles, such as Pay Advisors or Benefits Officers, may transition into a Pension Advisor position with additional training and development. **Student and Early Career Programs**: The Government of Canada offers the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) and Post-Secondary Recruitment Initiative (PSRI) for recent graduates. These programs can provide entry-level experience in benefits administration and may lead to permanent positions. Once you join DND as a Pension Advisor, you may have opportunities to advance to senior advisor roles, team lead positions, or move into related areas of compensation and benefits management.

Part-Time Options

Part-time work is available for Pension Advisor positions with DND, though availability may be limited depending on operational needs. If you are hired on a part-time basis, you will typically work between 17.5 and 32.5 hours per week on a regular schedule. Flexible work arrangements, including compressed work weeks and flexible start and end times, are often available to Pension Advisors. These arrangements are negotiated individually with your manager and depend on the needs of your team and branch. Remote and hybrid work options have become more common in federal government roles. Depending on your position and management approval, you may be able to work from home on a part-time or full-time basis. Since much of pension advisory work involves system-based tasks, research, and phone or email communication, many duties can be performed remotely. However, some in-office presence may be required for meetings, training, or complex cases that benefit from face-to-face discussion. Discuss specific work arrangement options with your manager and HR team during the hiring process and throughout your employment.
