This role is essential to helping DND navigate complex legislative frameworks and support defence policy development. Your day-to-day responsibilities include conducting legal research on bills and regulations, drafting legislative summaries and briefing documents, maintaining legal files and precedent databases, preparing correspondence, and assisting with legislative committee appearances. You may also support the development of internal policies, coordinate with other government departments on legislative issues, and help track changes to laws that affect DND operations. You will work in a collaborative legal environment within DND headquarters or regional offices, typically in Ottawa or other major centres. You'll be part of a team dedicated to supporting sound legal decision-making across the Department.

Most positions require a college diploma or university degree in law, paralegal studies, legal assistant studies, or a related field. Many candidates complete a paralegal certificate or diploma from an accredited Canadian institution. Strong foundational knowledge in Canadian law, legislative procedures, and legal research methods is essential. Professional certifications such as those offered by provincial paralegal associations are valued and may be required depending on the specific position. Within DND, you will receive on-the-job training in defence law, parliamentary procedures, and internal legal processes. The Government of Canada supports ongoing professional development, including access to legal research databases, writing courses, and specialized training in legislative analysis. Many paralegals pursue additional certifications in areas like administrative law or regulatory compliance to advance their careers.

Entry Plans

You can enter this career through several pathways in the federal Public Service. The most common route is applying to advertised competitions for Paralegal positions at DND or other government departments. These competitions are open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents and typically appear on the Government of Canada Job Bank and departmental career pages. If you are already a Government of Canada employee, you may be able to access internal competitions or transition programs that allow lateral moves into Legislative Services roles. DND also participates in student recruitment programs, including co-op placements and post-secondary recruitment initiatives, which can lead to permanent positions. Some candidates enter through the Interchange Canada program or by joining as a casual or term employee and competing for permanent roles. To stay informed about opportunities, register on the Government of Canada Job Bank, follow DND's careers page, and consider reaching out to departmental recruitment teams. Competition results are merit-based and consider your education, experience, and performance during the selection process.

Part-Time Options

Part-time work is available in some Paralegal positions, though full-time roles are more common in Legislative Services given the ongoing demands of legislative tracking and policy support. Flexible work arrangements, including flexible hours and compressed work weeks, may be negotiated with your manager depending on operational requirements. Remote and hybrid work options have expanded across the federal government, and many paralegal support functions can be performed remotely or on a hybrid basis. The extent of remote work depends on the specific unit's needs—some legislative research and document preparation can be done from home, while other tasks like attending meetings or accessing secure files may require in-office presence. When applying, inquire about flexible work policies with the hiring team, as these arrangements are increasingly common in professional roles across DND.
