Overview

As an Organization and Classification Coordinator, you play a vital role in supporting the effective management of human resources within the Department of National Defence. You work with managers, employees, and HR teams to ensure that positions are properly classified, organizational structures are efficient, and staffing decisions align with Treasury Board policies and collective agreements. Your work directly impacts how DND attracts, develops, and manages its civilian workforce. Your day-to-day responsibilities include analyzing job duties and responsibilities to assign appropriate classification levels, preparing classification review documents, coordinating consultation with stakeholders, and tracking organizational changes. You gather information from position descriptions, conduct interviews with job incumbents and managers, and research comparable positions within the federal public service. You also maintain classification databases, provide guidance to managers on HR processes, and help resolve classification disputes or grievances related to position levels. You work in a collaborative environment within HR branches at various DND locations. Your role bridges the gap between operational managers who need clarity on roles and responsibilities, and HR professionals who must ensure compliance with federal standards. You may work with colleagues across multiple departments and engage with the Public Service Commission on staffing matters. The work requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple requests while maintaining confidentiality.

Many successful candidates have completed courses in organizational design, HR management, or public service classification standards. The Public Service Commission also offers resources on federal staffing, classification, and organizational management that support ongoing professional growth.

Entry Plans

There are several pathways to enter this career in the federal Public Service: **Open Competitions**: DND regularly posts Organization and Classification Coordinator positions through public competitions open to Canadian citizens. These competitions evaluate your education, work experience, and demonstrated abilities through written tests, interviews, and reference checks. **Internal Pools and Priority Hiring**: Current Government of Canada employees may be hired through internal priority lists or department-specific talent pools. These processes move more quickly than open competitions and give preference to existing public servants. **Post-Secondary Recruitment**: Some larger HR initiatives recruit graduates directly from colleges and universities with relevant programs in business administration or human resources. **Lateral Moves**: If you're already working in another federal department or DND position, you may be able to transition into this role by applying to competitions or through internal staffing processes. Your previous government experience is valued and can accelerate your entry. **Student Work Programs**: DND offers summer employment, co-op placements, and student internship opportunities in HR departments that can lead to permanent positions upon graduation.

Part-Time Options

Part-time and flexible work arrangements are increasingly available for Organization and Classification Coordinator positions within DND. Many coordinators work on a part-time basis, typically ranging from 20 to 30 hours per week, which allows for work-life balance or concurrent studies. Remote and hybrid work options have expanded significantly in the federal public service. Depending on the specific DND location and operational needs, you may be able to work from home for a portion of your week or full-time. Since much of the work involves database management, document preparation, and virtual consultations with stakeholders, remote work is often feasible. Flexible scheduling is also common, allowing coordinators to adjust their start and end times within departmental guidelines. The specific flexibility available depends on your manager, the operational demands of your HR section, and any collective agreement provisions that apply. Many employees combine part-time schedules with flexible hours to meet both personal and organizational needs. It is recommended to discuss specific arrangements during the recruitment process or with your manager once hired, as options vary by location and staffing level.
