Overview

As an Open Data Officer with the Department of National Defence, you will play a key role in advancing transparency and accessibility of government information. You will be responsible for managing, publishing, and maintaining open datasets that allow Canadians, researchers, and other stakeholders to access and use DND data. This position involves working with complex data systems, ensuring data quality and compliance with federal open data standards, and collaborating across departments to identify which datasets should be made publicly available. Your day-to-day responsibilities will include cataloguing datasets, removing sensitive information while preserving data integrity, creating data documentation, and troubleshooting data-related issues. You will work closely with information management specialists, data analysts, and program managers to understand data requirements and implement solutions that meet both departmental and Treasury Board open data directives. You will also stay current with evolving data standards and best practices in government information management. The work environment is typically office-based, though many tasks can be performed remotely. You will interact with colleagues across multiple divisions and may present technical information to non-technical audiences. This role offers the opportunity to contribute directly to government transparency while developing expertise in data management and information governance.

Competitions may be conducted at the Local, Regional, or National level depending on departmental needs and are posted on the Government of Canada's Job Bank (jobs.gc.ca). The Public Service may also establish recruitment pools to fill multiple positions more efficiently. Students and recent graduates may access opportunities through federal student employment programs, including the Student Work Experience Program (SWEP) or post-secondary recruitment initiatives, which can lead to indeterminate employment. Part-Time Options

Part-time opportunities are sometimes available depending on operational needs and departmental staffing models. Eligibility and availability should be confirmed during the competition or recruitment process. Flexible work arrangements, including hybrid or remote work options, are increasingly available within the federal Public Service. The extent of remote work capability for this role depends on specific departmental requirements and the nature of the tasks involved. Some data management activities can be performed from home, while others may require on-site access to secure systems or collaborative meetings. DND Human Resources can provide specific details about part-time and flexible work options at the time of recruitment. Employees already in the Public Service may also have opportunities to transition to flexible arrangements by discussing options with their manager and Human Resources.
