Entry Plans

Entry into a Materials Clerk position with the Department of National Defence typically occurs through open public service competitions announced on the Government of Canada Job Bank and the DND Civilian Workforce Recruitment Centre. These competitions are open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and other eligible candidates. You may enter this career through several pathways: direct application to advertised Materials Clerk positions, participation in entry-level recruitment pools established by DND, or lateral transfer if you already work in another federal government position. The Public Service Commission manages the hiring process to ensure fairness and transparency. Some candidates begin their careers through the Student Work Experience Program (SWEP) or Interchange Canada programs, which can lead to permanent positions. Veterans and members of the Canadian Armed Forces may have priority consideration under Veterans Preference provisions. Networking with DND recruitment teams and attending career information sessions can help you understand available opportunities and prepare for competitions.

Part-Time Options

Materials Clerk positions are typically available on a full-time permanent basis within the Department of National Defence. However, the federal public service does offer flexible work arrangements for employees, which may include part-time work, job sharing, or flexible scheduling depending on operational requirements and managerial approval. Remote work for Materials Clerks is generally limited due to the hands-on nature of the role, which requires physical presence in storage facilities and supply areas to manage inventory effectively. However, administrative components of the role, such as processing requisitions and maintaining records, may occasionally be performed remotely depending on your specific posting and departmental policy. We encourage you to inquire about flexible work options during the recruitment process or once hired, as arrangements are determined on a case-by-case basis considering both employee needs and operational requirements. Part-time and flexible options may be more readily available during recruitment for certain positions or in specific locations—check individual competition notices for details.
