Apply Build a Job Description

Overview

Marine Engineer Officers - Offshore Drilling Rig work in the challenging and dynamic environment of offshore oil and gas operations. In this role, you will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of marine engineering systems aboard drilling vessels and platforms. You will oversee the maintenance, repair, and optimization of propulsion systems, power generation, heating and cooling systems, and other critical mechanical equipment that keeps offshore operations running smoothly. As a Marine Engineer Officer, you will supervise engineering teams, manage technical operations, and ensure compliance with maritime regulations, environmental standards, and safety protocols. Your responsibilities include monitoring equipment performance, troubleshooting mechanical problems, coordinating maintenance schedules, and mentoring junior engineering staff. You will work closely with other departments including operations, safety, and environmental teams to maintain operational excellence and minimize environmental impact. This role operates in a unique work environment characterized by extended periods offshore in remote locations, exposure to marine and industrial conditions, and the need for rapid problem-solving under pressure. You will be part of a specialized maritime workforce contributing to Canada's resource sector while maintaining the highest standards of safety and environmental stewardship.

Training

To succeed as a Marine Engineer Officer, you will typically require a bachelor's degree in marine engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related engineering discipline from an accredited Canadian university. Professional Engineering (PEng) designation or eligibility for licensure is highly valued and may be required for advancement. You must obtain and maintain appropriate maritime certifications, including Chief Engineer Officer (Class 1 or Class 2) or Second Engineer Officer certification from Transport Canada, depending on vessel tonnage and horsepower. These certifications require a combination of formal education, sea time, and examination. Additional specialized training in offshore safety systems, emergency response, and environmental management is essential. The Government of Canada supports continuous professional development through technical courses, leadership training for supervisory roles, and opportunities to maintain current maritime knowledge. You may pursue advanced certifications in specialized systems such as dynamic positioning, subsea equipment, or renewable energy technologies relevant to evolving offshore operations.

Entry Plans

Entry into this position within the federal Public Service typically occurs through advertised Public Service Commission (PSC) competitions at the appropriate classification level. Candidates may enter through several pathways: direct competition if you hold the required marine engineering credentials and maritime certifications; participation in lateral transfer opportunities if you are already a Government of Canada employee in a related engineering field; or consideration from established staffing pools for engineering professionals. The specific entry mechanism depends on current staffing needs, your education level, certifications, and years of relevant experience. Some positions may be filled through student recruitment programs for recent engineering graduates, which provide structured progression toward full Marine Engineer Officer status. Interested candidates should regularly monitor the Job Bank and Public Service Commission website for advertised positions and maintain current professional credentials and certifications.

Part-Time Options

Due to the specialized nature of offshore operations and the requirement for continuous vessel operation, Marine Engineer Officer positions are typically full-time roles. However, the Government of Canada is committed to supporting work-life balance where operationally feasible. While the position itself is full-time, scheduling often follows a rotational roster system common in maritime industries, where you work extended periods offshore (typically 28 to 56 days) followed by scheduled leave periods onshore. This rotation can provide blocks of time for personal commitments and family activities, though it differs from traditional part-time arrangements. Remote work for administrative and planning tasks may be possible during onshore leave periods, subject to operational requirements and management approval. Flexible work arrangements are typically negotiated on a case-by-case basis within the constraints of maritime safety standards and continuous operational requirements. Discuss specific scheduling and flexibility options with your hiring manager during the recruitment process.
