Entry Plans
To enter this career in the federal Public Service, you typically apply through open competitions advertised on the Government of Canada's official job board (jobs.gc.ca). These competitions are competitive and based on demonstrated experience in human resources management, staffing coordination, or related fields. You must be a Canadian citizen, obtain security clearance, and meet language requirements (usually English or French, or both).
Many managers in this role enter through lateral moves from other federal departments or from within DND's Human Resources divisions, having worked in staffing-related positions. If you are currently a federal public servant at an appropriate level, you may be eligible to apply to internal staffing competitions or participate in mobility programs that facilitate movement between departments. Some candidates enter through graduate recruitment or development programs if they have advanced education in human resources or business administration. DND may also use staffing pools to fill vacancies more quickly when multiple positions are available.
Part-Time Options
This position is typically offered on a full-time, permanent basis. However, the federal Public Service does support flexible work arrangements where operationally feasible. Depending on business needs and management approval, you may be able to negotiate flexible hours, compressed work weeks, or hybrid work schedules that combine remote and in-office days. Remote work options have expanded across the federal government and may be available for portions of this role, particularly for activities such as policy analysis, report preparation, and virtual meetings. Requests for part-time work or job sharing are considered on a case-by-case basis. To explore specific flexibility options, you would discuss arrangements with your manager and the DND Human Resources branch once in the position.
