DND supports employees in maintaining and upgrading professional credentials throughout their careers.

Entry Plans

Entry into this manager-level position typically occurs through federal public service job competitions advertised on the Government of Canada's Job Bank website. Candidates may enter as a Manager (EC-04 or EC-05 level) after demonstrating successful progression through intermediate real estate or property management roles, or through lateral moves from related government positions. The Public Service Commission conducts merit-based competitions that evaluate candidates on required education, experience managing teams and budgets, and technical knowledge of real property management. Some candidates enter through the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) or the Post-Secondary Recruitment Campaign (PSRC) in entry-level positions, then advance through internal competitions and development opportunities. Experienced real estate professionals from the private sector can also compete for manager positions if they meet the specified education and experience requirements. DND occasionally uses staffing pools to fill multiple vacancies across regions.

Part-Time Options

Part-time and flexible work arrangements may be available depending on operational needs and business requirements. Many manager-level positions in real estate services can accommodate flexible schedules, compressed work weeks, or remote work for portions of the week, particularly for administrative and planning activities. However, some responsibilities such as property inspections, stakeholder meetings, and site visits typically require in-person attendance. Managers interested in part-time arrangements should discuss options with their hiring manager and human resources, as availability depends on team structure and workload. Job-sharing arrangements are occasionally possible at the manager level. Remote work eligibility may extend to virtual meetings, report writing, and team coordination, though the frequency of in-office time varies by location and project demands. DND is committed to supporting work-life balance while maintaining service delivery to the Canadian Armed Forces.
