Overview

As a Manager - Property and Facilities Management, you will lead teams responsible for the operation, maintenance, and strategic oversight of Defence and Climate Change mitigation properties and facilities across Canada and internationally. You will manage real property assets, coordinate facility operations, and ensure that Defence infrastructure meets operational requirements while maintaining safety and compliance standards. This role combines technical facility management knowledge with leadership and strategic planning to support the Canadian Armed Forces' operational readiness. Your responsibilities will include overseeing maintenance programs, managing facility budgets, coordinating with contractors and service providers, and implementing policies for sustainable facility operations. You will work with stakeholders across Defence to align facility strategies with organizational priorities, manage capital projects, and ensure compliance with federal regulations and Defence standards. Your decisions directly impact the operational capability of military installations and the safety of personnel and assets. You will work in a dynamic environment that may include military bases, training centres, administrative facilities, and specialized operational properties. The role requires strong organizational skills, the ability to manage multiple priorities, and effective communication with military and civilian personnel at all levels.

Training

To succeed in this role, you should have a post-secondary diploma or degree in facilities management, real property management, engineering, or a related field. Many managers in this career have completed professional certifications such as the Certified Facility Manager (CFM) designation or equivalent credentials recognized by the Canadian Association of Facility Managers. The Department of National Defence provides ongoing professional development through training programs in Defence asset management, sustainable facilities practices, and advanced leadership. You will have access to courses in project management, budgeting, occupational health and safety, and federal procurement processes. Participation in professional associations and industry certifications is encouraged to keep current with evolving facility management practices and technologies.
