Many successful candidates hold degrees in education, business administration, human resources, or related fields. Some positions may accept equivalent work experience in lieu of formal education. Professional certifications in instructional design, training delivery, or human resources management are valuable assets. Many managers pursue credentials such as the Certified Professional in Training Management (CPTM) or designations from professional training associations. Once hired, you'll have access to Government of Canada professional development programs, including leadership training, project management courses, and specialized instruction in adult education methodologies. DND also supports ongoing learning through tuition assistance and conferences relevant to training and development. Entry Plans

Entry into this manager-level position typically occurs through several pathways: Public Service Staffing: DND regularly posts competitions for Manager positions on the Government of Canada's official job board (jobs.gc.ca). These competitions are open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents. Successful candidates must pass written exams, interviews, and reference checks. Internal Mobility: Current DND and federal public service employees may apply for advertised positions or be identified through internal talent management processes. Having experience in training, education, or supervisory roles within the department strengthens your candidacy. Lateral Moves: Professionals with management experience in related fields—such as human resources, curriculum development, or organizational learning—can transition into this role through competitive processes. Student and Early Career Programs: Some candidates enter DND through post-secondary recruitment initiatives, beginning in junior training roles before advancing to management positions. Security Clearance: This position requires a valid security clearance, which is obtained during the hiring process if you don't already hold one.

Part-Time Options

Part-time opportunities for Manager positions in this classification are limited, as management roles typically require full-time commitment to lead teams and oversee programs effectively. However, DND and the Government of Canada offer flexible work arrangements for full-time managers in many locations. Flexible scheduling, compressed work weeks, and telework options are increasingly available, particularly for administrative and planning aspects of the role. Remote work may be possible for certain tasks such as program evaluation, budget planning, and virtual training delivery, though on-site presence is usually required for team leadership and facility-based training oversight. Work-life balance initiatives, including leave options, employee assistance programs, and wellness supports, are available to all federal public service employees. Eligibility for part-time or flexible arrangements should be discussed with your hiring manager and HR representative, as options depend on operational requirements and program delivery needs.
