Some positions may accept candidates with equivalent work experience and demonstrated expertise in multimedia production and project management. Professional certifications in project management (such as PMP or CAPM), digital media platforms, or specific software tools are valuable. Government of Canada training in communications, media relations, and federal communications policies is provided to new hires. Ongoing professional development opportunities include training in emerging multimedia technologies, leadership development programs, advanced project management, and specialized software certifications. Many managers pursue professional development through associations such as the Canadian Public Relations Society or the Broadcast Executives Society to stay current with industry trends and best practices.

Entry Plans

Entry into the Manager - Multimedia position typically occurs through one of several pathways within the federal Public Service. Most candidates enter through a formal Government of Canada competition process where positions are advertised on the Government of Canada Jobs website. Interested applicants submit applications demonstrating their multimedia production experience, team leadership capabilities, and relevant education or certifications. Lateral moves from other federal departments or agencies with equivalent multimedia management experience are another common entry path. Candidates working in multimedia roles at other government departments or in the private sector may apply when Manager - Multimedia positions become available. Some individuals advance to this position after working as multimedia specialists or coordinators within DND, gaining experience with government communications standards and organizational priorities before moving into management roles. New graduates with relevant degrees may enter the public service at the specialist or coordinator level through student recruitment programs or entry-level competitions, then progress to management positions after gaining experience. The Treasury Board Secretariat periodically establishes talent pools and staffing processes that may allow qualified candidates to be appointed to Manager positions with fewer formal competitions.

Part-Time Options

Manager - Multimedia positions at DND are typically full-time permanent roles due to the leadership and coordination responsibilities required. However, the federal public service does offer flexible work arrangements where operational requirements permit. These may include compressed work weeks, flexible start and end times, or telework options on certain days. Remote work may be available for portions of the role, particularly for tasks such as content planning, stakeholder meetings, and administrative duties. The extent of remote work eligibility depends on the specific organizational needs and the nature of multimedia production work, which sometimes requires in-person presence in production facilities or studios. Part-time or job-sharing arrangements are rarely available for management positions, but managers may be able to negotiate flexible schedules within collective agreement provisions. Any flexible work arrangements would be subject to operational requirements and approval by the hiring department.
