Candidates can enter at the Manager level or progress through intermediate IT positions (IT Specialist, Senior IT Specialist, or IT Advisor roles) to reach this management level. The Public Service Commission regularly opens competitions for management positions, and successful candidates must demonstrate relevant experience, education, and the required competencies. Current Government of Canada employees may apply for internal competitions, which may have different eligibility criteria. Lateral moves from other federal departments or from the private sector are possible, though private sector experience requires validation against Treasury Board classifications. DND also participates in the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) and the Post-Secondary Recruitment Campaign (PSRC), which can provide pathways to permanent positions for recent graduates. Bridging programs and acting appointments may also provide opportunities to transition into management roles.
Part-Time Options
Part-time and flexible work arrangements are available for this position, subject to operational requirements and management approval. Many IT Planning and Reporting managers work full-time due to the strategic nature of their responsibilities and the need for continuity in planning cycles and reporting deadlines. However, flexible scheduling, compressed work weeks, and telework options are often available on a case-by-case basis. Remote work has become more common in IT management roles since the pandemic, and DND continues to offer hybrid work arrangements where employees split time between home and the office. The specific flexibility available will depend on your team's operational needs, project timelines, and your manager's discretion. DND is committed to supporting work-life balance and will work with you to find arrangements that meet both organizational and personal needs, within the constraints of security requirements and the need to maintain adequate on-site presence for meetings, mentoring, and team coordination.
