Entry Plans

Most positions are filled through competitive recruitment processes advertised on the Government of Canada's Job Bank and the DND civilian careers portal. Entry typically occurs at the Manager level (AS-03/AS-04 or equivalent classification), though candidates may advance to this level from coordinator or specialist positions within DND. You may enter through several pathways: direct competition if you meet the required experience level; internal DND competitions if you are currently employed with the department; lateral moves from related positions in information technology, records management, or operations management; or advancement from Information Asset Management Specialist or Coordinator roles. Some candidates enter through bridge positions or development programs designed to build management capabilities. The Public Service Commission oversees all competitive processes to ensure fairness and merit-based selection. Interested candidates should regularly monitor job postings and may also connect with DND's recruitment team to understand upcoming opportunities and qualification requirements.

Part-Time Options

Part-time arrangements for managerial positions are limited but may be negotiated on a case-by-case basis, depending on operational requirements and business needs. Many DND civilian employees benefit from flexible work arrangements, including flexible hours and compressed work weeks, provided core operational coverage is maintained. Remote work options have expanded across the Public Service and may be available for portions of this role, particularly for administrative and planning activities. However, the extent of remote work will depend on the specific position, team requirements, and security protocols. Some in-person presence at your designated workplace is typically necessary for leadership responsibilities, classified information handling, and team coordination. When considering this career, discuss flexible work possibilities during the recruitment process. Arrangements are subject to approval by your manager and must align with departmental operational needs and security requirements.
