To succeed in this role, you typically need a bachelor's degree in business administration, computer science, public administration, or a related discipline. Many candidates have completed professional information management certifications such as the Certified Information Manager (CIM) designation or the Information Governance Certification (IGC). Familiarity with federal information management frameworks, including the Treasury Board Policy on Information Management, is essential. Once hired, you will have access to Government of Canada and DND-specific professional development programs. These include training in information governance, records management systems, security protocols, and leadership development. DND provides ongoing training in new information management technologies, compliance requirements, and best practices to keep your skills current.

Entry Plans

Entry to this Manager position typically occurs through several pathways within the federal Public Service. Many candidates are recruited through advertised competitions open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and other eligibility groups. These competitions may specify that applicants hold a relevant designation, such as the Certified Information Manager credential, or have equivalent experience in information management roles. You may also enter this position through internal mobility if you are already employed with the Government of Canada. Many managers transition from intermediate information management positions (such as Senior Specialist - Information Management roles) within DND or other federal departments. Student programs and co-op placements in information management can provide pathways to permanent positions. Priority hiring pools for veterans and Indigenous peoples may also be used depending on the competition. DND regularly recruits for these positions; monitoring the Government of Canada job board (jobs.gc.ca) and DND careers portal will help you identify opportunities aligned with your background.

Part-Time Options

This Manager position is typically offered on a full-time, permanent basis. However, the federal Public Service does support flexible work arrangements where operationally feasible. Many DND locations offer hybrid or remote work options for managers, particularly for activities such as strategic planning, policy development, and administrative work that do not require daily on-site presence. Part-time or job-shared manager positions are uncommon in the federal government due to the supervisory and decision-making responsibilities involved. If you require flexible scheduling, discuss your needs during the recruitment process or with your manager after hiring. Arrangements may be possible depending on operational requirements, team structure, and the specific needs of your DND branch. Leave options, including parental leave and unpaid leave, are available under federal collective agreements and policies.
