Overview

As a Manager - Disability Management, you lead the development and implementation of disability management programs and policies that support employees across the Department of National Defence. You oversee a team of disability management professionals and work collaboratively with human resources, occupational health services, and operational managers to create inclusive work environments. Your role is essential in helping injured or ill employees return to work safely and productively, while ensuring compliance with Treasury Board policies and labour legislation. Your responsibilities include directing disability management initiatives, managing accommodation requests, overseeing return-to-work programs, and providing expert guidance on complex cases. You develop strategic plans to reduce workplace injuries, promote mental health and wellness, and support employees with disabilities or chronic health conditions. You also represent the department in matters relating to disability management and serve as a subject matter expert for senior leadership. You work in a dynamic environment within National Defence Headquarters or regional Defence Team locations. This role requires strong leadership skills, compassion for employees facing health challenges, and the ability to balance organizational needs with individual accommodations. You interact regularly with employees at all levels, union representatives, medical professionals, and external stakeholders.

To qualify for this position, you typically need a bachelor's degree in human resources management, business administration, social sciences, or a related field. Some positions accept equivalent experience in human resources or disability management roles. Professional certifications in disability management (such as through the Canadian Association of Disability Management), human resources management, or occupational health and safety are highly valued and may be required. Ongoing professional development opportunities include courses in employment law, accommodation practices, mental health awareness, occupational health and safety, and management skills. The Public Service offers learning programs through the Canada School of Public Service and various online platforms. Many managers pursue advanced certifications in disability management, labour relations, or organizational development throughout their careers. Staying current with evolving legislation, best practices, and accommodation technologies is important in this field.
