Entry Plans

You can enter this career in the federal Public Service through several pathways. The most common route is through a Public Service Commission competition for the Manager - Communications position, which evaluates your communications management experience, leadership abilities, and strategic thinking skills. These competitions are advertised on the Government of Canada Jobs website and may be open to current public servants, former public servants, or the general public depending on the specific competition. If you are already working in the federal Public Service, you may transition into this role through lateral moves or promotions from Communications Advisor or Specialist positions. Some individuals enter through student or early career programs such as the Federal Student Work Experience Program or the Post-Secondary Recruitment Initiative, beginning in entry-level communications roles and advancing through experience. Veterans with relevant communications experience may also have access to dedicated hiring programs. Networking with DND recruiting teams and staying informed of job postings through the Government of Canada Jobs portal is essential for identifying opportunities.

Part-Time Options

Part-time and flexible work arrangements for Manager - Communications positions are available in many cases, though flexibility may be more limited at the managerial level compared to non-supervisory roles. Some positions offer telecommuting options, particularly for administrative or strategic work, though managers typically need to be available for in-person meetings and team leadership. The extent of flexibility depends on operational needs, team requirements, and individual arrangements negotiated with your supervisor and DND management. Compressed work weeks and flexible start times may be possible depending on departmental circumstances. Remote work options expanded significantly during recent years and continue in many cases, though you should expect to work on-site regularly for team supervision, stakeholder meetings, and crisis situations. Specific arrangements should be discussed during the hiring process and with your manager once in the role. DND supports work-life balance initiatives and accommodations for employees with accessibility needs or caregiving responsibilities.
