You can enter this career through several pathways within the federal Public Service. Most commonly, candidates apply through a public competition advertised on the Government of Canada Job Bank. Many successful applicants come from lateral moves within DND or other federal departments, having demonstrated client service and supervisory experience at lower classification levels. The Public Service Commission may maintain pools of qualified candidates from recent competitions to fill vacancies. Some candidates advance through the administrative career stream, starting in positions such as Administrative Officer or Client Services Coordinator and progressing through demonstrated performance and merit-based competitions. If you're a recent graduate, look for student work-study programs or the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP), which can provide entry into federal service and help you build toward a management career.

Part-time and flexible work arrangements are available for many Manager - Client Services positions, depending on operational requirements and the specific DND business line. Some managers work compressed work weeks or flexible scheduling that accommodates both service delivery needs and work-life balance. Remote work options have expanded across the federal Public Service; depending on the role's requirements, you may have opportunities to work from home for portions of your week while maintaining office presence for team leadership and client meetings. Telework eligibility is assessed on a case-by-case basis according to DND policies and the specific functions your team performs. Part-time management roles are less common but may be available in certain circumstances. It's best to discuss flexible work options with the hiring manager during the recruitment process, as arrangements vary based on operational needs and client service demands.
