Professional certifications are highly valued, including the Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM), Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP), or Certified Professional in Supply Management (CPSM) from professional organizations. The Government of Canada encourages pursuit of relevant certifications and may provide support through professional development programs.
Ongoing professional development is expected and supported, including training in government asset management frameworks, Treasury Board directives, financial management systems, and leadership development. Many successful candidates participate in DND-sponsored training programs, Treasury Board learning initiatives, and external courses in supply chain optimization and asset lifecycle management.
Entry Plans
Entry to this position in the federal Public Service typically occurs through several pathways. The most common route is through a public competition advertised on the Government of Canada Job Bank and the DND Civilian Careers website. Competitions are open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents and follow Treasury Board standards for evaluation.
Candidates with existing federal public service experience may enter through internal competitions restricted to current public servants. Some positions may be filled through staffing pools established by DND for asset management roles, allowing qualified candidates to be appointed when vacancies arise.
If you are a recent graduate, you may explore the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) or Careers in Government program to gain initial experience with DND. Post-secondary recruitment initiatives and co-op programs are also available through universities and colleges with strong supply chain and business programs.
Lateral moves from other federal departments or from similar roles within DND's supply chain and logistics branches are common for candidates with demonstrated asset management experience. Veterans of the Canadian Armed Forces may have priority consideration under veterans hiring initiatives if they meet the qualifications.
Part-Time Options
Part-time work is possible in some asset management roles, though the Manager position is typically full-time due to supervisory and decision-making responsibilities. However, DND is committed to supporting work-life balance and flexible work arrangements where operationally feasible.
Remote and hybrid work options have expanded across the federal public service. Depending on the specific position and departmental needs, managers may be able to work from home for a portion of their week, particularly for administrative, analytical, and planning tasks. Telework arrangements are negotiated between the employee, manager, and the department based on operational requirements.
Flexible work schedules, compressed work weeks, and telecommuting may be available depending on the asset management unit's needs and the nature of your responsibilities. We encourage you to discuss flexible work options during the recruitment process and with your manager once hired. DND continues to develop policies supporting federal employees' needs for flexibility while maintaining service delivery to the Canadian Armed Forces and defence operations.
