As a Manager - Airport, you lead the safe, efficient, and secure operation of Department of National Defence (DND) airports and airfields. You oversee the day-to-day management of airport facilities, coordinate with aviation personnel, and ensure compliance with Transport Canada regulations and DND operational requirements. This role is critical to supporting military aviation operations and maintaining the infrastructure that enables Canada's defence capabilities.
Your responsibilities include supervising airport operations staff, managing maintenance schedules, overseeing runway and taxiway operations, coordinating air traffic services, and ensuring compliance with safety protocols and environmental standards. You develop operational procedures, manage budgets, and work closely with other DND departments, Transport Canada, and external aviation partners to maintain operational readiness.
You work in a dynamic, safety-focused environment where attention to detail and clear communication are essential. Airport operations run continuously, and you may be required to respond to operational issues outside standard business hours. This role offers the opportunity to directly support Canada's military aviation operations while managing complex infrastructure and personnel.
Key Responsibilities
Plan and manage the delivery of aviation services and programs, Supervise and develop staff within the aviation team, Monitor performance metrics and report on results, Develop and implement operational plans and procedures, Manage stakeholder relationships and ensure service quality
Post-secondary education in the relevant field; supervisory and operational management experience
Training
To qualify for this position, you typically need a bachelor's degree in aviation management, business administration, engineering, or a related field. Some candidates enter with equivalent work experience in airport operations or transportation management.
Professional certifications valued in this role include aerodrome operation certifications through Transport Canada, airport management credentials, or equivalent. Many managers pursue the Certified Member of the Airport Operators Council International (AOCI) designation or similar professional qualifications.
Once hired, you will complete DND-specific training including security protocols, military aviation procedures, and the Government of Canada's management practices. You may also pursue leadership development programs offered through the Public Service, courses in airport safety management, and specialized training in your specific operational area. Continuing education in regulatory compliance, emergency management, and supervisory practices is encouraged throughout your career.
Entry Plans
You can enter this career in the federal Public Service through several pathways. The primary route is competing in an open competition for a Manager - Airport position advertised on the Government of Canada Jobs website (jobs.gc.ca). These competitions are typically open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents.
If you already work in the public service, you may apply as an internal candidate, which can provide advantages in the selection process. Some candidates transition into this role through lateral moves from related transportation or facilities management positions within DND or other federal departments.
The DND also participates in the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) and the Post-Secondary Recruitment Campaign (PSRC), which can provide pathways into management roles for recent graduates. Military members transitioning to civilian careers may also have access to specific recruitment initiatives.
Before applying, ensure you meet the essential qualifications, obtain any required security clearance (usually Secret or higher for DND positions), and prepare a strong application demonstrating your management experience, knowledge of aviation or transportation operations, and commitment to safety and compliance.
Part-Time Options
Manager - Airport positions are typically full-time roles due to the continuous nature of airport operations and supervisory responsibilities. However, the Government of Canada does offer flexible work arrangements in many cases.
Depending on operational needs and management approval, you may be eligible for flexible scheduling, compressed work weeks, or telework for administrative duties. Some aspects of the role—such as schedule development, budget planning, and correspondence—can be performed remotely or during non-standard hours.
Remote work options are generally limited for this role because your primary responsibility is overseeing on-site airport operations and being available to address operational issues. However, administrative and planning components of your work may offer flexibility. Specific work arrangements are negotiated with your manager and depend on operational requirements at your assigned airport. We recommend discussing flexible work possibilities during the hiring process and with your manager once hired.
