Entry Plans
There are several pathways to enter the Manager - Accommodation Management role in the federal Public Service. Most commonly, candidates progress through internal competitions after working in lower-level accommodation or real property management positions within Defence or other federal departments. These positions, such as Accommodation Officer or Real Property Technician, provide essential experience in accommodation operations and management practices.
The Government of Canada regularly conducts national recruitment competitions for manager-level positions in accommodation management. These competitions are advertised on the Government of Canada job board (jobs.gc.ca) and are open to Canadian citizens with relevant experience. Lateral moves from other federal departments are also possible, as experience in facility management, accommodation services, or related fields in other government organizations is valued.
The Federal Student Work Program and Co-op programs offer opportunities for students to gain experience in accommodation management roles during their studies. Successful completion of these programs can lead to indeterminate (permanent) employment opportunities. Some candidates also enter this career through external recruitment when the Government of Canada seeks experienced professionals from the private sector with proven accommodation or facility management backgrounds.
Part-Time Options
Part-time opportunities in Manager - Accommodation Management roles are limited, as most management positions in Defence require full-time commitment to oversee operations and supervise staff effectively. However, the Government of Canada is committed to supporting work-life balance and flexible work arrangements where operationally feasible.
Depending on the specific position and facility, managers may have access to flexible work hours or compressed work weeks that allow for better scheduling of personal and professional responsibilities. Remote work options may be available for specific tasks such as administrative work, budget preparation, and reporting, particularly when working at headquarters locations like National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa. However, the nature of accommodation management—which often requires on-site presence at facilities, conducting inspections, and meeting with personnel—means that managers must maintain a significant on-site presence.
Internet connectivity and office technology at Defence facilities support digital collaboration tools, which can facilitate flexible work arrangements for administrative portions of the role. Specific flexible work options are determined at the time of hiring and depend on operational requirements, facility location, and management approval. Prospective candidates are encouraged to discuss flexible work arrangements with their hiring manager during the recruitment process.
