Entry Plans
You can enter this career through several pathways in the federal Public Service. Most commonly, positions are filled through open competitions advertised on the Government of Canada Job Bank (jobs.gc.ca) and DND's careers website. You may also enter as an internal candidate if you're already part of the Public Service, through lateral moves from related administrative or operations roles.
Student programs like the Post-Secondary Recruitment (PSR) program and Co-op programs can provide entry points if you're still studying. Some candidates start in mail room operator or clerk positions and advance to supervisor roles through promotion competitions. DND may also maintain staffing pools for mail services positions, allowing qualified candidates to be hired as positions become available.
Part-Time Options
Full-time permanent positions are the standard offering for Mail Room Supervisors in DND. However, some flexibility may be available depending on operational needs and departmental policies. Term positions (temporary contracts ranging from several months to a few years) are sometimes available and can offer pathways to permanent employment.
Remote work is limited for this role due to the hands-on nature of mail room supervision and the need for on-site presence to oversee operations and staff. However, certain administrative aspects of the role may be completed off-site. Flexible start and end times may be negotiable within the constraints of ensuring mail room coverage during business hours. For current details on part-time, casual, or flexible arrangements, contact the DND Civilian Recruitment Centre or check the specific job posting.
