Locomotive Engineers operate and maintain railway locomotives for the Department of National Defence. You will be responsible for safely operating locomotives, coupling and uncoupling cars, and conducting pre-operation inspections to ensure equipment is in proper working condition. As a Locomotive Engineer, you will follow established railway protocols, communicate with yard personnel and dispatchers, and maintain detailed logs of operations and any mechanical issues encountered. This role is essential to DND's ability to transport military equipment, personnel, and supplies across Canada's rail network. You will work in various weather conditions and may be required to work shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays. The role requires a high level of attention to detail, mechanical knowledge, and the ability to make sound decisions under pressure.

Training
To qualify as a Locomotive Engineer with DND, you must possess a high school diploma or equivalent. Applicants typically require previous railway operating experience or completion of a recognized locomotive engineer training program. You will need to obtain and maintain a valid Railway Locomotive Engineer's Certificate issued by Transport Canada, which involves both written examinations and practical assessments. DND will provide on-the-job training specific to military railway operations, equipment systems, and Defence policies. Full-time permanent employment is the standard for Locomotive Engineer positions with DND. Remote work is not applicable to this position, as your presence is required to operate locomotives and conduct physical inspections.
