Your work contributes to maintaining organized, accessible information systems that support Defence operations and personnel development. In this role, you will handle a variety of tasks including cataloguing and classifying library materials, processing acquisitions, maintaining database records, assisting patrons with information requests, and managing circulation systems. You may also help organize physical spaces, perform inventory checks, and provide customer service to military personnel and civilians using Defence libraries. Working in a structured information environment, you will follow established procedures and work closely with librarians and information specialists to ensure materials are properly organized and accessible. As a Library Clerk, you work in a professional but dynamic environment. You may be based at a Defence headquarters, military base library, or information centre where you interact regularly with diverse users. Key competencies include attention to detail, organizational skills, basic computer literacy, and the ability to work with database and library management systems. The Public Service offers tuition support programs for employees seeking to upgrade qualifications relevant to their work.

Entry Plans

The primary pathway to become a Library Clerk in the Public Service is through a competitive recruitment process managed by the Public Service Commission (PSC) or through Defence recruitment initiatives. These competitions are typically advertised on the Government of Canada's job portal (jobs.gc.ca) and may be open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents. You may enter as a casual or term employee first, which can lead to permanent positions as vacancies arise. Some individuals transition into Library Clerk roles from related positions in Defence administrative or information management areas. Student summer employment or co-op programs with Defence can provide entry opportunities and help establish your qualifications. Lateral moves are possible if you already work in the Public Service in a related administrative or information management role. Defence also accepts applications from individuals with library or information management experience from outside government. Preference may be given to candidates with prior relevant experience or training in library operations.

Part-Time Options

Part-time and term positions are available for Library Clerk roles, particularly in Defence libraries and information centres. These arrangements provide flexibility and are often used to cover peak demand periods, special projects, or temporary staffing needs. Remote work for Library Clerk positions is limited, as the role requires hands-on work with physical materials, patron interaction, and on-site database management. However, some administrative and cataloguing tasks may occasionally be performed remotely depending on the specific Defence location and operational requirements. Flexible scheduling options may be available at some locations, allowing you to arrange hours within operational needs. If you are interested in part-time or flexible work arrangements, discuss options during the recruitment process or with your manager once hired. Availability of flexible options varies by Defence location and the specific library or information centre where you work.
