Entry Plans

You can enter this career through several pathways in the federal Public Service. The most common route is through public competitions advertised on the Government of Canada's Job Bank and internal DND recruitment channels. These competitions typically target candidates with relevant education or experience in learning and development, human resources, education, or administration. The Canadian Armed Forces and DND also participate in student employment programs, including the Post-Secondary Recruitment Initiative and summer work-study positions, which can lead to permanent opportunities. If you are already employed in the Public Service, you may transition into this role through internal competitions or priority staffing processes. Lateral moves from related HR positions, administrative roles, or education backgrounds are also possible. Part-Time Options

Learning and Development Coordinator positions in DND typically offer flexible work arrangements. Many roles provide options for part-time employment, term positions, or flexible scheduling to accommodate personal circumstances. Remote work is increasingly available, particularly for administrative and coordination tasks, though some positions may require on-site presence for direct training delivery support or facility coordination. The extent of flexibility depends on the specific position and operational requirements. Roles supporting virtual or online learning delivery often have greater remote work potential, while positions coordinating in-person training or managing physical learning spaces may require regular office attendance. Work-life balance initiatives, compressed work weeks, and telework agreements are standard considerations in DND. When applying, you can discuss flexible work preferences with hiring managers, as many coordinators successfully arrange arrangements that suit both organizational needs and personal requirements.
