As a Leading Deckhand, you will supervise and coordinate deck operations on Department of National Defence vessels. You will be responsible for leading a team of deckhands in performing essential maritime tasks including mooring, cargo handling, maintenance of deck equipment, and ensuring vessel safety protocols are followed. Your leadership will be critical in maintaining operational readiness and a safe working environment for your crew.
Your responsibilities will include planning and assigning deck work, monitoring crew performance, maintaining deck equipment and systems, and ensuring compliance with maritime regulations and DND safety standards. You will work closely with the ship's command and other departments to coordinate vessel operations. You will also be responsible for training and mentoring junior deck crew members, conducting safety briefings, and documenting maintenance and operational records.
You will work in a dynamic maritime environment, both at sea and in port. Your position requires physical stamina, practical seamanship skills, and the ability to make sound decisions under pressure. The role demands strong communication and leadership abilities, as you will be accountable for your team's performance and safety.

Training
Entry into this position typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent and Canadian maritime certifications appropriate to the vessel class.
